Judy Hyman has a B.S. degree in music with a concentration
in violin from the Indiana University School of Music and extensive
teaching and performing experience. She is a founding member of
the folk-rooted alt-rock band, The Horse Flies, with whom she has
toured extensively in the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and recorded
7 albums, including releases on MCA and Rounder Records. During
the summers of 2000 and 2004, she toured in the band of pop singer
Natalie Merchant. She
has performed in orchestras and quartets, and continues to travel,
perform, and record in a variety of bands. Critics have described
her playing as 'haunting,' 'stirring,' 'powerful,' 'beautiful,'
'rousing' ... Judy also composes and has written music for film
and tv.
Judy teaches both children and adults -- from beginners
to experienced players -- fiddle music or classical music. In addition
to building repertoire, she focuses on physical technique, which
is at the core of skilled, comfortable playing. With all students
she incorporates theory and ear training.
With children she combines the Suzuki repertoire with
folk songs, fiddle tunes, and appropriate classical pieces in a
program to suit the individual and encourage creativity and independent
learning.
Judy also specializes in teaching traditional fiddle
music of the American Southeast with all the bowing intricacies
that are central to its rhythm and nuance.
Lessons can be weekly, or a flexible schedule can
be arranged.
